MJ’s Mane was born out of love, legacy, and a deep desire to innovate an industry that has long overlooked the needs of Black women.

Growing up, I watched my mother (everyone called her MJ), navigate a world that often demanded more than it gave. A Nigerian immigrant, she balanced raising four children, attending community college full-time to become a dental hygienist, and working night shifts at a local elderly home, all while making ends meet on minimum wage. Life was relentless, and time was a luxury she didn’t have.

One thing that made her life just a little bit easier was relaxing my hair. It was a simple ritual that saved her time, energy, and effort in the midst of her endless responsibilities. Relaxers became a staple in my life, not just as a personal choice but as a cultural touchstone—woven into the history and identity of Black women for generations.

But despite its significance, the relaxer industry has remained stagnant, failing to evolve in ways that truly prioritize hair health and safety. That’s why I created MJ’s Mane—a brand designed for Black women, by Black women. We’re redefining what it means to relax hair, centering innovation, quality, and the well-being of our community.

MJ’s Mane is an ode to my MJ. Her strength, resilience, and unwavering belief in me. She taught me to reach for the stars and more, to create a legacy I'd be proud of. This is my mark. This is our legacy.
